Build Your Own Campervan or Buy a Ready-Made Motorhome? My Honest Thoughts

Many people who dream of vanlife eventually find themselves asking the same question: is it better to buy a ready-made motorhome or build your own campervan?

When I bought my motorhome, I chose a ready-made solution for one very simple reason: I did not have the time to build one myself. I wanted to get out on the road, start traveling, and enjoy the freedom of motorhome life without first taking on a major project.

And honestly, it was absolutely the right decision for me at the time.

But buying a ready-made motorhome has also taught me something important. No matter how nice it is, there are almost always compromises. You might like the overall layout, but still feel that certain details are not quite right. There are often parts you are happy with and others you would have preferred to do differently.

That is probably why, over time, I have become more and more interested in the idea of building my own campervan. When you build it yourself, you get the chance to create something that truly fits your own needs, your style, and the way you want to live and travel. The more I think about it, the more I feel that my next motorhome will probably be one I build myself.

Why the idea of building your own campervan is so appealing

I completely understand why so many people dream about building their own campervan. There is something special about the idea of creating a small home on wheels that is designed around your own life.

Instead of adapting to someone else’s choices, you get to decide what really matters most. Maybe you want a more practical kitchen setup. Maybe a comfortable seating area matters more than anything else. Maybe smart storage is the priority, or maybe you simply want a more minimal solution that still feels personal and welcoming.

That is exactly what I find so attractive about building it yourself. You are not just buying a vehicle. You are creating a space that is meant to work for your everyday life and the way you want to travel.

The downside of buying ready-made

Of course, buying ready-made is easier in many ways, and that is exactly why I chose it. I did not have the time to start from scratch, learn every step of the process, and spend months on a build. I wanted something practical that would let me get started right away.

But the downside is that convenience often comes with compromises. That is something I have really noticed since buying my motorhome. Even if you are generally happy with your choice, there are almost always details you wish had been different.

For example, I am not completely happy with the seating area by the kitchen. It works, but it is not really designed the way I would have wanted it. To me, that is a very clear example of what happens when you buy ready-made. You get something that works, but not necessarily something that feels exactly right.

And that is one of the biggest reasons why the idea of building my own campervan feels so appealing. Then you are no longer choosing the best option from what already exists. Instead, you get to create something based on what you actually want.

Can it be cheaper to build your own?

I also think one of the big advantages of building your own campervan is that it can actually be cheaper, especially if you buy a used van and do much of the work yourself.

That is a big part of why I find the idea so interesting. In Sweden, ready-made motorhomes are often very expensive, and even when you pay a lot, you still often have to live with compromises. If you start with a used vehicle and build it yourself, there is at least the possibility of creating something more personal at a lower cost.

Of course, building your own is not automatically cheap. The final cost depends on the vehicle, the materials, the electrical system, the insulation, the water setup, and how much of the work you can actually do yourself. Still, I think it can be a very attractive option financially, especially compared with buying a ready-made motorhome at Swedish prices.

Why I think my next one might be self-built

The more I think about it, the more I feel that my next motorhome might be one I build myself.

That does not mean I regret buying a ready-made one. Not at all. It was the right choice for me at the time, and it allowed me to start this lifestyle without having to wait. But now that I know more about what I like, what I need, and what I would want to change, the idea of building my own feels much more interesting.

I like the idea of creating a space that works better in everyday life. Something more practical. Something more personal. Something that feels less like a compromise and more like a real fit for the way I want to travel.

For me, that is really the biggest appeal of building your own campervan. It is not just about money. It is also about freedom, comfort, and the feeling of creating something that truly feels like your own.

Is it smart to do your research before building?

If you are seriously thinking about building your own campervan, I think it makes sense to learn as much as possible before you start. It is a project with many decisions, and it is easy to miss important details if you try to figure everything out entirely on your own.

It is not just about choosing the layout or the interior. It is also about things like insulation, ventilation, electricity, water, and how everything will actually function in real life once you are out traveling. The more you understand from the beginning, the easier it becomes to plan the build realistically and avoid common mistakes.

The good thing is that there is plenty of information available today. Blogs, YouTube channels, forums, and Facebook groups can all provide both inspiration and practical advice from people who have already built their own vans. For those who want a more structured approach, guides and other educational resources can also be helpful in walking through the process step by step.

To me, that feels like a good way to make the whole journey less overwhelming and to get a clearer picture of what is actually involved before getting started.

Final thoughts

Buying a ready-made motorhome was the right decision for me when I made it. I simply did not have the time to build one myself, and I wanted to get out on the road sooner rather than later.

But that choice also showed me that ready-made solutions almost always involve compromises. You get convenience and speed, but you do not always get exactly what you want.

That is why I have gradually become more and more drawn to the idea of building my own campervan in the future. I like the idea of starting with a used vehicle, creating something more personal, and hopefully building a space that suits both my budget and the way I actually want to travel.

So if you are trying to decide between buying ready-made and building your own, my advice would be simple: think about your time, your budget, and how important it is for you to have something that truly feels like your own. Buying ready-made might be the best choice right now. But building your own might be the better choice next time.
